Orji Kalu returns to Senate after spending six months in prison

Orji Kalu

After spending six months in prison, the Senate  chief whip, Orji Kalu, has resumed legislative duties.

Kalu was released from prison last  week after the Supreme Court cancelled his conviction on the ground of procedural errors in the trial.

Kalu returned to the Senate today, June 9, amid warm reception from his colleagues whom he was seen exchanging pleasantries with.

“I just want to thank God for everything that has happened. It is the will of God. I want to urge Nigerians to keep hope alive,” he told journalists as he approached the Senate chamber entrance.

Kalu did not resume his duty as the chief whip in today’s sitting. The deputy chief whip, Sabi Abdullahi, still acted in his stead.

The Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, said it is God’s doing for Kalu to be back.

“I want to welcome our one and only chief whip of the Senate, and indeed the National Assembly. Chief whip, you are welcome, we are very grateful to the Almighty God for his blessings,” Lawan said.
