As President Muhammadu Buhari’s unilateral suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, continues to generate controversy, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday said the president has the party’s back.
In a dramatic and unprecedented move on Friday, Buhari suspended Justice Onnoghen and in his place immediately named Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammed, who is from Bauchi State. He followed it up by inaugurating Mohammed as the acting CJN.
The President made the announcement at the Council Chambers, Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Speaking to TheNiche on telephone from Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mr. Lanre Issa-Onilu, said the party supports the president.
The APC had, last week, insisted that Onnoghen, who is accused of false declaration of assets, must stand trial.
“Do you want to separate the president from the APC?” Issa-Onilu queried when he was asked the party’s position on the president’s action.
“Muhammadu Buhari is our president, he is the leader of our party, the APC. The action was taken by the APC government. That means that whatever action taken by the President was taken by the APC and we stand by it. And we totally support him. What he has done is the position of the party,” he concluded.
