Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) on Wednesday said that the resignation of Doyin Okupe from his position as campaign director-general of the party’s presidential campaign council projected Nigeria positively to the world.

Okupe resigned on Tuesday following the ruling by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja that convicted him of violating the Money Laundering Act.

In his resignation letter, Okupe said it was better not to allow his personal interest distract the campaign of the LP and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, hence his decision to step aside.

Obi responded in a letter, “It is a decision which I respect. The story of the historic effort, which has galvanised millions of countrymen, particularly youths, cannot be complete without mentioning Okupe’s commitment, dedication, and the boundless energy he brought to bear.

“It is my sincere hope that the legal system would afford Okupe an opportunity to eventually clear his name.”

Reacting to Okupe’s decision, Olubunmi Odesanya, the LP Publicity Secretary, Lagos State, told NAN that Okupe had raised the bar and the standard for others to follow.

Odesanya said that Okupe’s decision remained honourable to clear his name through the nation’s legal system.

“We are standing by him (Okupe). This is a great and noble step taken by our leader, Doyin Okupe.

“He (Okupe) is projecting Nigeria in a positive light to the world. We are proud of him,” the LP spokesperson said.
