The Ohaneze Ndigbo Council of Elders, on Wednesday, April 5, revealed it will ask the executive and legislative arms of the Nigerian government to look into the ethnic profiling of the Igbo in Lagos State during the 2023 polls.

The body also said it would send a protest letter to President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly to express their displeasure and sadness over the attacks on Igbo during the general elections.

Ohanaeze made this known in a statement signed and made available by the Chairman of the group, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the Secretary-General, Okey Emuchay, and others, after the Elders in Council’s virtual meeting held in Enugu.

The statement also hinted that a high-powered Igbo delegation will be sent to Lagos to meet with some Leaders of the state to establish a lasting peaceful and cordial relationship between the Igbo and the Yoruba in the south-west state.

According to them, the report will cover the number of Igbo killed, injured and hospitalised, as well as assets and property destroyed.

The statement read: “Amongst other terms of reference, the report must indicate: the number of Igbos killed, the number of Igbos injured and hospitalized, number of Igbos permanently incapacitated.

“The report shall include the comprehensive report of Igbo assets and property destroyed, including the burning of the market.

“These unpatriotic Nigerians destroyed properties belonging to the Igbo. For example, a whole market was burnt. The information available to us reveal that they are still threatening the lives of Igbos and their property in Lagos State.”

Prior to the governorship election on March 18, some thugs allegedly sponsored by the All Progressives Congress (APC) threatened Igbo in Lagos against coming out to cast their votes.

The threat and subsequent attacks on Igbo followed the victory of the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi in Lagos.
