Datti said: “Right now we want to know his condition. We even want to know if he is alive first of all, because when it involves battery, then somebody’s life could be at risk.”

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the running mate of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed fear that the student who was arrested and tortured for criticising Aisha Buhari, Aminu Mohammed, may not even be alive.

Aminu is a final-year student of Environmental Management at the Federal University Dutse (FUD), who made a Twitter post in June, months into the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), saying in Hausa: “Su mama anchi kudin talkawa ankoshi.” It means: “Mama has got fatter by eating the masses’ money.” He did not mention Aisha by name but attached her picture to boot.

On November 18, he was arrested on the campus of the Federal University of Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa by police officers who came all the way from Abuja.

Officials of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) said they met Aminu in police detention and he told them that Aisha Buhari personally supervised his torture.

The publisher of Daily Nigerian, Jafar Jafar, disclosed that Aisha Buhari suffered a leg injury after throwing a kick at Aminu. Recall that on November 20, days before Aminu’s travail came to light, reports emerged that the First Lady was rushed to Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja after suffering a leg fracture.

In a press conference today December 1, Datti said: “We are trying to make contact with Aminu Mohammed’s family and to find out if they have already appointed a lawyer. Then we will want to be properly guided by lawyers after which we will decide the very best way to help the young man.”

Datti added: “Right now we want to know his condition. We even want to know if he is alive first of all, because when it involves battery, then somebody’s life could be at risk.”
