Obiano says meeting to carry out plot held in Awka

Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano, has raise alarm on alleged plots to arrest key officials of the government. Obiano did not name those behind the plot but said the affected officials may be arrested on trumped charges using agencies of state to rig the Saturday election.

The governor made the disclosure in a statement by the commissioner for information and public enlightenment, C.Don Adinuba.

The release stated that Anambra state government has received credible intelligence reports about moves by members of a certain political party to use the instrumentality of the state to arrest key officials of the State Government anytime on trumped-up charges, so as to hijack the gubernatorial election holding on Saturday, November 6, 2021.

According to Obiano, one of the meetings was on how to use the coercive apparatus of the state to carry out this plot has just been held in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

He added that none of the heads of national security agencies is aware of the plot. “The desperate politicians want to use certain compromised operatives working without the knowledge, let alone the support, of the national heads of the security agencies to perpetrate this act”, the release added.

The alert, Obiano stated, is to bring the evil plans to the knowledge of all Anambra people but also to the attention of all relevant authorities for prompt action.

He enjoined Anambra voters to go about their normal business while the State Government takes every necessary action to ensure a free, fair and transparent election on Saturday.

“The elections in the State in the last few years have been very free and fair. We will continue to do everything possible to maintain the new tradition of free and fair polls”, Obiano stressed.

Many political parties are taking part in the poll but the prominent one’s are the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and Young Progressives Party (YPP).

Anambra state governorship election that comes up on Saturday, November 6, has been a major issue of discussion in recent days. The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), a separatist movement seeking the independent state of Biafra has vowed that the election would not hold. It has gone ahead to declare a sit-at-home order in the five states of the south-east, commencing, Friday, November 5 to November 10. The federal government and the Independent National Electoral Commission, have however maintained that the poll would hold.

To make good its position, the government has deployed 34,000 policemen, 24 armoured personnel carriers and an air surveillance team to the state, aside other security agencies.
