Labour Party (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has advised the Federal Government to handle the allegations police levelled against the president of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero with extreme caution.

TheNiche had earlier reported that the police on Monday, August 19, summoned Ajaero for questioning over an alleged link to terrorism financing and other allegations.

Responding to the invitation, the labour leader in a letter dated Tuesday, August 20, turned down the summon, saying it came too late.

He, however, added that he will honor the invitation on Wednesday, August 29.

Reacting to the development via a post he shared on his official X handle, Obi admitted that the invitation by police is normal given the sensitive position the NLC leader occupies.

The former Anambra governor, however, noted that the allegations listed in the letter are “weighty, with no clarity on the circumstances.”

He also wondered if the authorities are inviting Ajaejo as an individual or in his official capacity as the NLC leader.

Speaking via his social media page, Obi tweeted, “The alleged infractions listed on the letter of invitation circulating on social media, are weighty and there is no clarity on the circumstances and if the authorities are attributing these to personal conduct or responsibilities devolving on Mr Ajaejo as the undisputed leader of NLC.

“Extreme caution must thus be exercised in the manner in which this issue is handled. It is not unexpected that government will boot try autocratic methods to vow labour as a potential opposition force.

“Invitations like the one to Ajaero are expected. But the rule of law and the laws of evidence should be observed. Labour should stick to its strengths and powers in order to maintain democratic order.”
