Obi picks Okupe as tentative running mate

Dr. Doyin Okupe

Okupe was chosen as the VP placeholder to meet the 6:00 pm deadline for submission of running mates by presidential candidates

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has picked former special assistant on public affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Doyin Okupe, as his running mate for the February 2023 presidential election.

Okupe is also the director-general of the Peter Obi campaign organization.

Okupe, while appearing as a guest on the Channels Television Politics Today programme, said his choice as the VP candidate for Peter Obi was done to meet the deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the submission of running mates by presidential candidates. The deadline ended at 6:00 pm today.

Okupe also said that the Labour Party is in talks with other political parties, including the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Social Democratic Party (SDP) New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and many others on the possibility of forming a coalition to confront the PDP and APC.

He said it was not realistic for the Labour Party alone to win the presidency without alliances from the other parties.

He hinted that the substantive VP candidate will emerge after an alliance has been sealed with the other parties.
