Obi launches portal, urges old and young to volunteer money in his battle with moneybags

Peter Obi launched today the official website for crowdfunding his Villa run on the Labour Party (LP) ticket, calling on his legions of supporters in the Obidients Movement, old and young, to chip in their naira and kobo to help him win the race.

Obi leads in all opinion polls so far.

But he is in a three-way electoral battle with Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), both of them moneybags with formidable war chests and private jets to boot.

That is precisely why electioneering in Nigeria is costly.

Obi, former Anambra Governor, made the announcement in a tweet and asked his supporters to visit the official campaign website for the Obi-Datti Campaign Organisation (https://www.obidatticampaign.com/) to donate whatever they can.

“I invite every member of the OBIdient Family, and every supporter of our march to a new Nigeria to visit. You can use that medium to support and donate in cash & kind to the campaign,” Obi tweeted on Friday.

“Later today, I’ll be speaking at Oxford University on ‘Trends and Prospects of Nigeria’s Economy: Broader Implications for Africa’s Development.’”

Delay in campaign council inauguration

The PUNCH reports that the launch of the portal comes two days after some Nigerians expressed concern that Obi’s repeated consultations with Nigerians in the diaspora is stalling his campaign.

The LP leadership has said its Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) cannot be inaugurated in the absence of Obi and LP Chairman Julius Abure.

Both of them are currently attending rallies and other political programmes organised by Nigerians living abroad.

LP National Publicity Secretary Abayomi Arabambi explain in Abuja on Tuesday the constitution of the campaign council is being reviewed, but the date of its inauguration cannot be fixed until both Obi and Abure are on the ground.
