The Labour Party‘s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has reacted to the announcement by a former spokesman of his presidential campaign, Kenneth Okonkwo, that he was resigning from the party.
Mr Okonkwo, who joined the Labour Party in 2022 to support Obi’s presidential aspiration, disclosed his decision in a statement posted on his X handle on Saturday.
The former spokesperson said he decided to leave the LP because the party failed to inspire the brand of leadership that can solve Nigeria’s challenges.
He also said he was disappointed that Obi did not do enough to build the party and solve the party’s leadership crisis.

However, Obi was on Sunday night quoted by the chief spokesman of his campaign, Yunusa Tanko, as saying he did not think Okonkwo, also an actor and lawyer, was a mole in the LP.
Tanko said, “Following the announcement of the former Spokesperson of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Organization in the 2023 election, Kenneth Okonkwo that he was leaving both the Labour Party and the Obidients, I as Chief Spokesman of the Campaign contacted our principal Obi for his reaction and he told me he was sad by the development because he sees Okonkwo as a junior brother who played his role diligently during our struggle.
“Obi told me succinctly that Okonkwo cannot be called a mole in our family with the services he rendered and still renders in our struggle to create a new Nigeria that is possible.
“When I asked Obi if I could make his views on Okonkwo public he said yes because the public needs to know that there is no personal misunderstanding between us and Okonkwo but only a disagreement based on style and approach to problems.”
