Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo has said he did not discuss matters concerning leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, with South-East governors in Enugu State on Tuesday.

The South-East Governors Forum earlier said Obasanjo and the former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Emeka Anyaoku, paid them a visit at their meeting in Enugu.

The meeting, which lasted about six hours, had in attendance all the five South-East governors: Peter Mbah (Enugu); Alex Otti (Abia); Prof Charles Soludo (Anambra); Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi) and Hope Uzodimma (Imo).

The forum also said it would meet with President Bola Tinubu to see the possibility of releasing Kanu from detention.

This immediately led to insinuations that Obasanjo spoke with the governors about Kanu.

However, in a statement on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, the former president said he and Anyaoku only spoke with the governors on regional development issues.

The statement read, “The regional development issues discussed include that of security and infrastructure. Others were economic and cooperative/collaboration, which was meant to complement the national economic development agenda.

“The meeting with them was at my invitation and of Chief Emeka Anyaoku before their summit begins. The issue of Nnamdi Kanu was not on the agenda and was not discussed in my presence”.
