Nigeria’s first choice goalkeeper at the ongoing 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), Christian Nwabili has said he is not happy despite Super Eagles’ victory against hosts, Cote d’ivore on Thursday night.
The South African based goalie made this known while speaking with Soccernet after the 1-0 win at the Stade Olympique Ouattara.
Nwabali, who was also in goal when Nigeria drew 1-1 with Equatorial Guinea, kept a clean sheet against the Elephants after making few saves during the game.
It was, however, the team’s captain, William Troost-Ekong, who gave Jose Peseiro’s side all three points against Cote d’ivore after scoring a second half penalty.
Asked if he was satisfied with his performance on the night, Nwabali said: “No, I’m not happy. I feel I should be doing more for my country, so I don’t feel it was a great game for me, or how my game usually is.”
He went on to say he wanted “to play the ball more, be more confident and enjoy” himself. He however, added that he was glad the Supper Eagles emerged victorious.
“I’m happy for the team’s win, but my performance is unlike me. I want to play the ball more, be more confident, and enjoy myself.” he further said.
Nwabali after the hard earned victory over Cote d’ivore, will now focus on Nigeria’s final group game against Guinea-Bissau on Monday.
