A former minister of education, Oby Ezekwesili, has lampooned Nigeria’s Northern Governors for advocating the censorship of the social media, saying that sort of thinking was the reason the region has remained dismal in all the human and economic indicators.

Ezekwesili, a good governance campaigner, made the comment in response to the decision of the northern governors who after a meeting chaired by its chairman, Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, urged the federal government to proceed with its planned regulation of the social media.

According to the northern governors, the social media was to blame for the riot that followed the peaceful #EndSARS protest, arguing that subversive elements used the social media to incite the rioters.

But Ezekwesili said that kind line of thinking was chiefly responsible for the reason the north has been putting up poor showing in human and social indicators of governance.

“I am certain that some of the best minds in the North are ashamed of that bunch that gathered together as “Northern Governors” and wrote that trash on the #EndSARS protests as well as #SocialMedia. No wonder all economic, human and social indicators of Governance remain dismal,” she said.

The federal government has made the regulation of the social media a top priority, a project the minister of information, Lai Mohammed, is currently spearheading.
