Despite the time extension for another six weeks for Nigerians to get their National Identity Number (NIN) or lose access to their telephone use or internet, the crowd at the Lagos office is still overwhelming.

TheNiche visited the Alausa office of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) at about 9 am today, December 22, and found that hundreds of NIN applicants were locked out of the premises. NIMC shares the premises with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

It was gathered that some of the NIN  applicants besieged the NIMC office as early as 6 am to found hundreds of other people waiting there.

It was gathered that upon the arrival of the NIMC officials, they admitted only about 25 people who came the earliest and shut out the rest.

Those who would have wished to fill up their NIN registration online have  also been frustrated by the website which has remained down since Monday night and up till the time of filing this report.

The NIMC website that is unreachable

No reason has been given for why the website has remained down, but the volume of traffic of applicants may have overwhelmed the capacity of the website.
