Nigeria’s U-17 wallop Egypt 4-0 in World Cup qualifiers

Nigeria’s U-17 are likely to meet Ethiopia who defeated South Africa in the first leg of their encounter in the final round of the qualifier

 

Nigeria’s U-17 female team, The Flamingoes trashed their North African counterparts, Egypt 4-0 in the African qualification series for this year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup played on Sunday at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja. 

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Nigeria missed opportunities to take the lead in the 13th and 29th minutes respectively when Opeyemi Ajakaiye and Adeshina missed scoring chances.  

But The Flamingos eventually opened the scoring in the 28th minute after Ajakaiye scored an angled shot that beat goalkeeper Habbiba El Taher in goal to register her fourth goal of the qualifiers. 

The visitors almost equaliser three minutes later, when Laila Zaher got the better of the Nigeria defence and forced goalkeeper Faith Omilana into a save.

Nigeria doubled their advantage in the 39th minute when striker Omowunmi Bello headed home from a corner kick by Tumininu Adeshina to make it 2-0 to The Flamingos.  

The Nigerian girls made it 3-0 In the second half when defender Miracle Usani shot past Egypt’s goalkeeper after finding herself with the ball just outside the Egyptian box after everyone had missed a corner kick. 

Nigeria effectively killed the tie in the 62nd minute, when Bello lifted the ball above onrushing El Taher after she was put through by Taiwo Afolabi. 

Bello could have scored a hat-trick but missed narrowly from close range on two occasions. As the game ended 4-0 in favour of the host.  

The teams will meet again in Cairo on 31st April with the winner poised to meet either Ethiopia or South Africa in the final round of the series for a ticket to the FIFA World Cup in India.

Ethiopia had earlier defeated South Africa 3-0 away from home on Saturday.
