Constitutional lawyer, Professor Ben Nwabueze, has declared that he is participating in the national conference to help write a new constitution that will meet the aspirations of Nigerians regardless of political divide.

He said the way the conference is structured is not in the best interest of the country, and this may cause it to fail.

In his view, the conference Nigeria needs is one that can give it a new constitution with some legal basis.

“It must have some legal framework. It must have the competence to take legally binding decisions, especially the competence to adopt a new constitution for Nigeria, one that will be supreme.

“But that is not the kind of conference that is going on now. However, I still believe that the conference can be salvaged. This is what I am working on now so that we can salvage something from the conference,” he said.

Nwabueze spoke with TheNiche in an exclusive interview in Umuahia after he led a delegation of Igbo leaders to congratulate Abia State Governor Theodore Orji on his election as South East Governors Forum Chairman.

He expressed confidence that Nigeria can still be transformed into a better place that makes everyone proud, adding that what is needed is for President Goodluck Jonathan to have the backing of the National Assembly for the conference.

Nwabueze applauded Orji whom he said is in the forefront of the battle for Igbo interests, and urged him to take the people to the next level.
