No less than 12 percent of the 2021 graduands of Covenant University bagged first class.
The feat has caused stir in Nigeria’s social media. The reason is understandable. Government owned universities make first class a sacred grade reserved in some cases, for no one.
A break down of Covenant University graduands of 2021 shows that of the 1,664, 201 made First Class, approximately 12 percent of the students.
Some Nigerians think that having such a huge number of First Class graduates in a university was a sign of academic compromise.
A capacity development expert, Dipo Awojide, said there was nothing wrong for such a percentage of graduands finishing with first class.
“Nothing wrong with 201 out of 1,664 Covenant University students graduating with a First Class degree.
What is wrong is having 30% of a cohort graduating with a 2.2 & 60% graduating with a 3rd class degrees. The mentality of a lot of people have been messed up by the system,” he said.
A Nigerian medical doctor based in the UK, Dr Harvey Olufumilayo mocked the Nigerians who feel that First Class is so sacred.
He said: “There’s a lot of first class graduates from Covenant University.Just wait when people graduate from the Govt Universities- including my own. You will see captions like: ’11 years in Uniben, do am if e easy”I came I saw I conquered.’ Even though Na the university conquer am.
“Countless students graduating with first class from Covenant university- yet it doesn’t diminish the standard of the school. And it remains one of the best in the country.
But govt uni professors think: A is for God, B is for VC, C is for me, Fight for the rest. Cruel Sadists,” he said.
