With few hours remaining to the election, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Kwara South, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, has not yet regained his freedom after the Kwara State police command arrested him following clashes between his supporters and those of his opponent, Lola Ashiru of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ibrahim, a serving senator, is seeking re-election in a state where observers have doubted the neutrality of the police.
The new Kwara state police boss is Kayode Egbetokun, a former security aide to ex-Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu, an arch rival of Senate President Bukola Saraki.
Saraki’s sin to Tinubu, a national leader of the APC was that he outsmarted the APC and emerged Senate president against the choice of the party.
On social media, a hashtag, #FreeSenRafiu has been created to demand the release of the politician, to at least allow him to participate in his own election.
