Up to 18,940 suspects of drug crime have been arrested nationwide by the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in the past two years, according to NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa.

He said the NDLEA secured 3,324 convictions, seized 5.4 kilograms of different controlled drugs, narcotic substances, and rehabilitated 3,326 drug abusers in the period.

Marwa was speaking n Yola where an award was conferred on him by the Adamawa Honours Society in recognition of his service to the nation.

He urged parents, communities, and religious leaders to upscale campaigns to tame the menace, warning, “drugs do not discriminate against tribe, religion or region.”

The NDLEA has acquired drug and lie test kits, he disclosed, and advocated  intending couples be tested for drug use before marriage.

“Drug tests will determine the innocence or otherwise of couples and save marital relationships from collapse due to drug abuse.”

According to him, the NDLEA is working hard to reduce the supply and demand for drugs, which will significantly add value to the fight against narcotics.

Marwa commends Buhari on narcotics war

Marwa commended President Muhammadu Buhari for supporting the NDLEA in the fight against illicit drugs, adding: “I also commend the Adamawa House of Assembly for enacting laws against drug-related offences.”

He said the award would spur him to do more, and commended the organisers for finding him worthy of it, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), as reported by The PUNCH.

Dauda Markus-Gundiri, an official of Adamawa Honours Society, explained Marwa’s track record informed the award in public service.

He described him as the true “son of the soil” who serves the nation with commitment, dedication, and sincerity of purpose, considering his performance in numerous positions held.

Markus-Gundiri promised the group would continue to recognise deserving individuals and groups with such gestures, especially those who served humanity selflessly.
