The president of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria ( MWUN), has described Late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola (MKO), as a martyr and symbol of democracy in Nigeria, even as the foremost maritime union joins other Nigerians and the Federal Government to celebrate this year’s democracy day

This message was contained in a release made available to TheNiche and signed by the Head of Media of the Maritime Workers Union ( MWUN), comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna.

The statement reads,”The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria ( MWUN) under the leadership of Comrade, Pince (Dr) Adewale Adeyanju felicitates with Nigerians and the Federal Government under the presidency of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, President and Commander – In – Chief of Nigerian Armed Forces,on the occasion of Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

” It would be recalled that Democracy Day in Nigeria was informed by the annulment of June 12, 1993 election where Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola ( MKO ) won the election of that year in a landslide under the Military Presidency of Gen. Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB), who annuled what was adjudged the fairest, freest and widely acclaimed best election in Nigeria and the entire global community including the international observers, who came to witness the election.

“Today, Abiola has been so honored and had become a matyr and a symbol of democracy in the country, given to the understanding of the immediate past administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, who made June 12th, a nation- wide holiday. However, Kudos must be given to Buhari for recognizing what Chief Abiola represents as far as democracy is concerned, especially to Nigeria and Nigerians.

“In this regard, on behalf of my entire executives in the Maritime Workers Union, we celebrate with Nigeria and her teeming resilient citizens who have come this far in upholding what’s today known as democracy day, which has become a reality in celebrating an uninterrupted democracy since 1999
