Roma Manager, Jose Mourinho caused a buzz online after sharing cryptic posts showing footballers who have cut holes in their socks on social media.

In the five-image post on his Instagram page, various pictures containing legs of different players who have cut holes in the backs of their team socks were revealed.

A close look at the first image shows white socks with one hole cut across both legs, while others revealed more striking polka dot scissor work made by athletes who have dismembered their socks.

The development where players remove pieces of their socks in the calf region appears to be a growing trend in the professional game and there are some suggestions that it is being done to reduce the pressure build-up caused by the clothing.

It was reported that players do so because the fabric cuts some of the blood flow to the calf, leading to cramps and discomfort.

Sharing the post, the former Chelsea manager, Mourinho captioned it “Beautiful socks for the Beautiful Game… Approved by the football authorities”

It remains to be seen whether his decision to post images was a tongue-in-cheek joke aimed at the strange-looking kit adjustment or a disgruntled moan at players.

However, the bizarre series of images have left pundits and other netizens attempting to decode the true meaning behind the Portuguese tactician’s words, with majority saying it’s a subtle dig at players who cut their socks.

The English duo of Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka are notorious for this, they were pictured with holes in their sock at the World Cup alongside other stars who have adopted the new habit.

Mourinho, who spent 9 years in the Premier League, has come under pressure in his position as Roma’s head coach in recent weeks, he recently revealed he could have left his position at the club in December.
