Motorists stranded on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as gridlock persists

traffic snarl on Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Thursday

A major gridlock which began late on Tuesday on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has become a regular occurrence as motorists and commuters were stranded for the second day.

The gridlock on Tuesday was caused by a 40-foot containerised trailer which broke down at the diversion of Ibafo and stretched all the way to the Long Bridge for Lagos outbound commuters.

By Wednesday, the gridlock became worse as commuters heading to work early were stranded following the traffic snarl on the road. The heavy traffic build-up stretched late into the night as most commuters were forced to abort the trip.

However, the situation on the road persisted yesterday as traffic snarled from Mowe to Berger for motorists heading to Lagos.

The situation, however, became chaotic when some VIPs and military vehicles resorted to driving against traffic, facing Lagos outbound vehicles, which resulted in a face-off at Opic Junction.

In spite of pleas from the policemen and officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) stationed on the Warewa and Opic Junctions, the VIPs and military officials continued to drive against traffic and this resulted in another gridlock that stretched to Alausa Secretariat for Lagos outbound vehicles.

A resident of Magboro, Adewunmi Aderibigbe described the experience on the road in the last three days as harrowing for commuters living along the road.

“I don’t know what we will enjoy from this government because they refuse to listen to the voice of reason. Complaints from commuters on the slow pace of work on the road coupled with the attitude of the contractors handling the road have fallen on deaf ears.
