Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu has rejected an opportunity to line up for the Black Stars of Ghana against Nigeria in the upcoming World Cup qualifier in March.

Ghana crashed out of the ongoing African Nations Cup (AFCON) in Cameroon at the group stages and are poised to clash with their West African rival Nigeria in two months for a place at the Qatar 2021 World Cup.

The 22-year-old who was born to Ghanaian parents, cited an injury the first time he was called up by the Ghana Football Association, GFA, during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

However, a Ghanaian football administrator, Alhaji Grusah has now revealed that the Southampton star declined another offer to represent Ghana warning him to stay away from him when he approached him.

Grusah while talking to Atinka FM said, “The Black Stars Chairman tasked me to speak to Mohammed Salisu because he’s from Kumasi. I called his dad and he linked me to him

“Salisu flatly told me to stay away from his matter. He questioned me that if he was my son, would I advise him to play for Ghana?”

The Ghanaian FA official thereafter vowed never to contact the player on the matter again, adding that he does not know what problem exists between the defender and the Ghana FA.

He also said he is aware that the GFA had used other means in the past to secure the services of the strong defender but he remained adamant and refused to show interest in representing the Black Stars.
