Two men who allegedly robbed a Point of Sales (POS) attendant in the Igando area of Lagos State yesterday, were set ablaze by a mob.

According to Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Benjamin Hundeyin, the mob had already incinerated the alleged thieves beyond recognition and disappeared before the  police arrived.

In a tweet on his verified handle, Hundeyin condemned the action of the mob and wondered how the practice could be put to an end.

He said: “Yesterday, at Igando, two men allegedly robbed a POS attendant. A mob descended on them and set them ablaze; burnt beyond recognition. Police arrived but the mob had fled. Investigation has commenced. Again, how do we put a stop to this archaic and criminal practice?”

Tweeps have suggested how the practice of mob action could be stopped.

@chimakaobimdi said: “You people (police) always arrive late, I’m guessing it’s because you are always on twitter. Until you people stop extorting from citizens who report cases to you, only for you to let the culprit go, set examples that are seen. I for one do not trust the police. They can frustrate people.”

@Igwe_udor1 said:” You watch an American movie, and whenever the police arrests a villain, there’s joy in the land because they’re rest assured justice will be served, but what happens here? Most of these robbers are given shadow prison time, used by politicians during elections and later released.”

@Adaejiemeonu said: “Until una build trust and stop extorting people that bring cases to the station.”

But @iyaboawokoya suggested: “Amendment of the Criminal Code to state emphatically that every single person caught at a scene of mob action is guilty of manslaughter and a special sentence of 15 years in prison. Make it a ‘strict liability’ offence-you are present there, you are automatically guilty.”

@yinkus772003 countered her:”The danger is that, knowing our police men, they will abuse this and rope in innocent passersby. The fact is that police usually turn up late to incidents, when most of the original mob would have left the scene.”
