Media preserving democracy in Nigeria – Senate president

Saraki, the former Senate president

.Says media responsible for good election

Senate President, Olusola Saraki, has given kudos to the Nigerian media for its doggedness in ensuring that the nation’s fledgling democracy is preserved and not derailed.

Also, he praised the media for doing fantastic job in its reportage of events despite limitations, urging the media to rise up to the occasion of the 2019 election as they are powerful stakeholder responsible for good election.

Saraki made the observation at the 4th anniversary lecture of The Niche newspapers on Friday in Lagos.

Saraki, who was represented by Senator Ben Bruce, asked the media not to relent in its duty of informing, educating and entertaining the public, insisting that the media still holds the ace and veritable vehicle in determining those that have access to leadership positions.

His words: “The media is a powerful tool for change and that is obvious. In my view the media has changed the way people think, talk and react to issues. Media has ensured democracy is preserved in our land.

“The media will also be responsible for good election; so they must rise up to the challenge. The truth is that the media has changed the game and they must ensure that those who aspire for offices, especially elective positions are put to task in terms of their credibility and competence among other criteria.

“There is no doubt that the media is doing a fantastic job despite noticeable failings but what they need to do is improve on what they are doing and focus more on development journalism.”

Contrary to the view of President Muhammadu Buhari, Saraki said that Nigerian youths are “intelligent, smart, hardworking, patriotic and deserves praise and encouragement.”
