Mechanic, apprentice in court over rape of palm wine seller

A mechanic, Musa Lamidi, and his apprentice, Gbemiro Ogunwamide, have been arraigned before an Ibadan Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, August 12, for allegedly raping a 20 year old palm wine seller.

The police charged the mechanic who is 32 year-old, and his apprentice, Gbemiro Ogunwamide, 25 with two counts of conspiracy and rape.

Magistrate Ibukun Osho, who did not take the plea of Lamidi and Ogunwamide, ordered the police to return the case file to the Oyo State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

Osho adjourned the matter until Oct. 27, for mention, but ordered that the defendants be remanded at the State’s Criminal Investigation Department.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Foluke Adedosu told the court that Lamidi and Ogunwamide allegedly conspired together to commit the offence.

Adedosu said Lamidi on July 14, at about 5.25 p.m. at Odo – Oba area, raped a 20-year-old woman palm-wine seller in his apprentice house.

She said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 357, 516 and punishable under section 358 of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State 2000.

NAN reports that section 358 of the Criminal Code stipulates life imprisonment for anyone found guilty of the offence.(NAN)
