A man and his wife have been detained by the police in Anambra for his alleged killing of his brother when they argued over the payment of N1,500 electricity bill.

Peter Orji allegedly killed Godwin his elder brother during an argument over the payment of the bill at their residence in Uruagu, in Nnewi North Council Area of Anambra.

The brothers were at home on Tuesday when they started arguing over Peter’s refusal to pay N1,500 for his monthly bill.

To get him to pay, it was learnt, power supply to Peter’s flat in the house was disconnected.

A source in the community told The PUNCH that Peter, who was angered by the development, stormed into his flat, brought out a gun and shot his brother dead.

After committing the crime, he reportedly rushed to the nearest police station and surrendered himself to the police to avoid being lynched by an angry mob.

However, state Police Public Relations Officer Tochukwu Ikenga, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, clarified that Peter was arrested contrary to claims he willingly surrendered himself to the police.

Ikenga said the wife of the suspect was first arrested at the crime scene and the couple are currently in police custody.

Police Commissioner Echeng Echeng has ordered the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for investigation Ikenga added.

Court remands man for killing his grandmother

In a related incident in Ondo earlier in the week, a court remanded a man for killing his grandmother.

Vincent Awonugba, 23, who was earlier reported to have allegedly killed his grandmother Florence Olaoye aged 68 for reprimanding him for smoking cannabis, was remanded in prison for murdering her during argument about food.

The accused was arraigned on a one-count charge of murder at a Magistrate’s Court in Akure, Ondo Sate.

Police arrested Awonugba for allegedly killing Olaoye with a knife on 6 August at her home in Labata Orimolade, Ondo town.

He claimed during interrogation to be innocent of the crime, saying neighbours intentionally linked him to his grandmother’s death because they knew they were always at loggerheads.

He appeared in court without legal representation and his plea was not taken.
