Manchester City moved back to the top of the Premier League after putting three goals past resolute Brighton in the second half at the Etihad.

After struggling to break down Graham Potter’s men in a frustrating opening period, Kevin de Bruyne provided the inspiration as City restored their one-point advantage over Liverpool.

The Citizens opened the scoring in the 53rd minute when Kevin de Bruyne powered down the centre before a fortunate deflection fell into the path of Riyad Mahrez and his attempt took another deflection beyond Robert Sanchez.

It became 2-0 in the 67th minute when Phil Foden’s 25 yards shot took a big deflection off Enock Mwepu leaving  Robert Sanchez rooted to his line as the ball flew past the keeper.

Bernardo Silva sealed the points eight minutes from time with a lovely curling finish after great work by Oleksandr Zinchenko in the build-up.

The importance of De Bruyne in Man City was felt in the game after creating the opener for Riyad Mahrez and providing the final pass for Bernardo Silva to wrap up the scoring.

The win helped the home side leapfrog Liverpool into the summit of the league table and relieved the tension around the Etihad Stadium.
