Manchester City captalised on slip-ups by Chelsea and Liverpool in the midweek Premier League fixtures, after they narrowly beat visiting Brentford 1-0 at the Community Stadium on Wednesday night.

They have now opened up an 8 points gap between them and their two closest rivals. Despite that, Man City’s manager Pep Guardiola is insisting the Premier League title race is far from over.

“There are 54 points to play for,” Guardiola said.

“All of you, thank you for your nice words because we win but I am not going to believe any words you say about it is already done or expected because Chelsea and Liverpool are more than exceptional. One is champions of Europe and the other has been our big rivals over the years.

“The distance is not because they drop points but because we win 10 games in a row.”

Brentford had their moments, with Yoane Wissa forcing a save from Ederson and Mathias Jensen coming close to scoring a goal after trying his luck from the halfway line. Ivan Toney almost scored too.

But just as Brentford were growing in confidence, Man City took the lead, as Foden scored from an assist from Kevin de Bruyne. His goal which was checked by VAR stood after he was judged to be onside.

City went close to scoring another goal, when  De Bruyne and Foden linked up again, with Foden heading the cross just wide of the mark.

De Bruyne then struck the frame of the post before the center referee, David Coote, ruled out Ruben Dias’s goal after he was judged to be offside.

The visitors held on and moved to 50 points. They are now 8 points ahead of Chelsea who have played the same number of games, and 9 ahead of Liverpool who have one game at hand.

Meanwhile, Brentford who is trying to beat the drop and secure a second season in the top flight stay in 14th position, 9 points ahead of Burnley, who occupy the first spot in the relegation zone.
