Man, 20, docked for allegedly causing death by reckless riding

The police on Tuesday arraigned a commercial motorcyclist, Mr Istifanus Markus, in a Mararaba Chief Magistrates’ Court.

Markus, 20, who resides near Jemil Motors in Nyanya, FCT, is charged with causing death by riding his motorcycle in a dangerous manner.

The prosecutor, Mr Samuel Okoro, told the court that Markus committed the offence on Jan. 16, 2013 at about 7.45 p.m. opposite City Rock Hotel on Abuja-Keffi Highway in Mararaba.

Okoro said Markus was speeding and riding his motorcycle without without particulars, number plate and regard for other road users.

He said that as result of his recklessness, the accused caused the death of a pedestrian whose name and address had yet to be known.

Okoro said that the accused thereby committed offences contrary to sections 22, 23, 28 and 62 of the Road Traffic Law.

The accused, who had no legal representative, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The magistrate, Mr Habila Abundaga, adjourned the matter till Aug. 12 and asked the accused to bring a lawyer on the next adjourned date to defend him. (NAN)
