Major political events that made the headlines last week

Pastor Tunde Bakare, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and President of the African Development Bank, AfDB, picked their presidential forms respectively.

Ahead of the presidential primaries of political parties, politicking and consultation have reached fever level with many politicians joining the race in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

On Friday, May 6, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, joined the ranks of those aspiring to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in office on the platform of APC.

Three different groups purchased the forms for the CBN governor. The groups, Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, Friends of Emefiele and Emefiele Support Group, said Emefiele was the only responsible and responsive person to succeed President Buhari.

Former governor of Rivers State and current Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; Senator Boroffice Ajayi, the Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu and former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun have picked the N100 million worth expression of interest and nomination forms of the party.

Also a former Manager Operations at the erstwhile Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Yakubu Mohammed, declared that he would contest for the presidential ticket of the APC.

Likewise, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and President of the African Development Bank, AfDB, picked their presidential forms respectively.

On Friday, South-West APC leaders met in Lagos to discuss the presidential primaries of the party. The meeting was attended by all presidential aspirants from the region but the meeting failed to reach a consensus.

In the week under review, President Buhari visited Ebonyi State to commission some landmark projects constructed by Governor Dave Umahi of the state on Thursday, May 5.

On Friday, May 6, the president met with South-East elders and other social political groups. Buhari maintained at the meeting that he will not release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

The President insisted that the region should allow the court to determine the faith of the detained leader of the proscribed group.
