Madrid City council has renamed the Alberto Garcia Sports Centre after the late Super Eagles goalkeeper, Wilfred Agbonavbar.
Agbonavbare who played for Rayo Vallecano from 1990 to 1996 was a member of the Super Eagles team that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and also reached the round of 16 at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States.
The motion to rename the Sports Centre was reportedly moved by Councillor Paco Perez during last Wednesday’s plenary session.
The former Eagles’ safe hands Agbonavbare died on 27th January 2015 at the age of 48. He was a cult hero in Vallecas having played for Rayo Vallecano between 1990 and 1996.
