Long road to jail for Lagos doctor who raped his wife’s niece

Doctor Olaleye

The long arm of the law today caught up with a senior doctor and managing director of Optimal Cancer Care Foundation, Femi Olaleye after it was proven that he indeed raped his wife’s nice.

According to the Lagos government which prosecuted the case, Olaleye committed two crimes – defilement and sexual assault by penetration of his wife’s niece which took place between March 2020 and November 2021.

Nothing in the public profile of Doctor Olaleye would suggest that he could carry out such crime.

He earned his first medical degree from the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, before proceeding to the Imperial College in London to earn more academic laurels.

Doctor Olaleye worked at the NHS in London for a while before returning to Nigeria where he devoted his life to humanitarian causes by establishing Free breast and cervical cancer screening for women.

But all his fine CV did not change the fact that he committed an unconscionable act. Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Lagos found the doctor guilty of raping a child and slammed him a life jail.

Doctor Olaleye was first arraigned in November in 2022 on a two-count charge of defilement of a child and sexual assault by penetration.

The medical doctor, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.

The cancer care advocate was accused of sexually violating a minor, who was said to be a niece of his wife, for over 20 months.

The prosecution presented at least seven witnesses. However, one was “withdrawn.”

The witnesses include the defendant’s wife, who reported the case to the police, the alleged survivor, (name withheld); a child forensic specialist, Bisi Ajayi-Kayode; police inspector Esther Igbineweka; medical examiner Akinbunmi Oyebimpe and Abe Leonard, a police officer.
