Liverpool leapfrogged league leaders, Manchester City after narrowly defeating resurgent Newcastle 1-0 at the St James Park in Saturday’s early kickoff.

The visitors dominated ball possession and goalmouth action but were only rewarded midway in the first half.

Naby Keita opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a lovely finish, but Newcastle were unhappy with the goal because it came from a challenge they deemed a foul.

James Milner had dived into a tackle and appeared to catch Fabian Schar, but the Liverpool midfielder got the ball and started the Reds’ attack.

The visitors then slipped Keita in on the right and he showed great composure to dribble across goal, beyond Martin Dubravka, and fire into the net through a wall of Newcastle defenders.

When Newcastle pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages, Liverpool were able to send on Thiago, Salah and Fabinho to see the game out.

The first half strike remained the only goal of the match, as both sides were unable to breach each other’s rearguard after that and the match ended 1-0 in favour of the visitors.

With the win, The Reds move top of the premier league ahead of Man City who head to Elland Road later in the afternoon to play Leeds United.
