The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Senator A’isha Jummai Alhassan, has said that the Ministry has done much in up-lifting the status and values of families, most especially the less privileged.
The Minister made this known through her representative, Hajia Binta Adamu Bello, at the International Family Day events which took place recently at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja.
In a press statement signed by the Ministry’s Director of Communications, Hassan Dodo, she said: “The Ministry has provided material assistance and items such as grinding machines, sewing machines, carpentry tools and others to distress families in different parts of the country”.
The observance of the International Day of Families was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly at its 112thplenary meeting held in 1993, whose theme is linked to 2030 agenda for sustainable development and in particular to goal 3 which ensures healthy lives and promotes well being for all at all ages.
The minister further announced financial assistance for settlement of bills for some indigent families.
“The ministry had provided training for the poor families in the area of income generation and skills acquisition to enable them become economically self sustaining and reduce dependency”, she added.
In her remarks, Mrs. Gbangboye, who represented permanent Secretary of the Ministry said: “The objectives of the observance of the International Family Day include bringing together all the stakeholders in family welfare to understand and analyze the challenges of families, to create and promote awareness on how to ensure healthy family lives and sustainable future among all segments of the society, ensure the socio-economic goals and generate employment that can improve the standard of living of the family unit”.
