Lagos tops as usual, raking in IGR more than 30 states combined

Lagos in the South West made the highest internally generated revenue (IGR) of  N267.232 billion in the first half of the year ended June 2021 (H1 2021) and Yobe in the North East the least with N4.031 billion.

Sandwiched between them are the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) which came second with N69.072 billion and Rivers in the South South third with N57.324 billion, according to the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

“The 36 States and Federal Capital Territory’s Internally Generated Revenue amounted to N849.12bn in H1 2021.

“In the first quarter of 2021, the Internally Generated Revenue was N398.26bn while in the second quarter it amounted to N450.86bn. This indicates a positive growth of 13.21 per cent,” the NBS said, per The PUNCH.

The report was subheaded under five categories – PAYE, Direct Assessment, Road Taxes, Other Taxes, and Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

The South West made the highest IGR in H1 2021 (N385.41 billion) followed by the South South (N156.17 billion). The North East had the least (N42.92 billion).

PAYE contributed the highest (N488.12 billion) followed by revenue from MDAs (N173.56 billion). Road Tax yielded the least (N16.75 billion).

“Internally Generated Revenue by Zones in the first half of 2021 shows that the South West zone recorded the highest revenue which amounted to N385,414,274,922.27 billion followed by the South South zone with N156,171,326,501.04 billion, while the North-East zone recorded the least internally generated revenue with N42,915,002,928.39 billion.

“Amongst the Internally Generated Revenue categories, PAYE contributed the highest which amounted to N488,106,692,662.06 billion, this was followed by revenue from MDAs which amounted to N173,555,639,556.76 billion.

“The least category was Road Tax with a contribution of N16,752,826,313.01 billion in the first half of 2021,” the NBS said.

Further breakdown

  • A breakdown reported by Nairametrics showed that the total N849.12 billion IGR in H1 2021 is a 38.5 per cent rise above N612.87 billion in H1 2020.
  • It also represents a 26 per cent increase against N673.82 billion in the first quarter of 2021 (Q1 2021).
  • The N385.4 billion IGR made in the South West in H1 2021 is 45 per cent of the total recorded by all states and the FCT.
  • Lagos with N267.23 billion accounted for 31 per cent of total IGR in H1 2021.
  • Tax revenue fetched N675.57 billion (80 per cent of the total).
  • MDAs revenue yielded N173.56 billion (20 per cent).
  • Total N450.86 billion IGR in Q2 2021 is a 13.21 per cent growth above N398.26 billion in Q1 2021.
