Lagos soars with 19m to lead top 10 internet user states, South West highest in numbers

Lagos officially has 18.9 million internet users, nearly its population of 20 million, and with that helps the South West to top the zonal numbers, factoring in Ogun (9.5 million) and Oyo (8.4 million) – a total 36.8 million in the zone among the first 10.
The latest figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) show the North West ranks second by zone in the top 10, with Kano at 9 million, Kaduna (7.4 million), and Katsina (4.6 million). A total 21 internet users.
The South South comes third with a total 10 million, spread out between Rivers (5.6 million) and Delta (4.4 million).
Adamawa at 5.4 million is the lone ranger from the North East in the top.
NBS data shows countrywide internet subscription reached 163.8 million in December 2023, with the top 10 states standing as follows:
1. Lagos (18.9 million)
Nigeria’s entertainment and commercial hub tops the charts with 18.9 million internet users, facilitated by its advanced infrastructure, coupled with its status as a business and tech melting pot.
Lagos is the most populous and richest state – by internally generated revenue (IGR) of more than N60 billion monthly. It is also the most peaceful and most conducive state for the convergence of cultures and businesses, thereby making it a hotspot for digital activities.
2. Ogun (9.5 million)
Ogun comes up in second place with 9.5 million internet users, leveraging its close proximity to Lagos.
Also, Ogun’s effort at improving ICT infrastructure makes it an emerging centre for technology and industrialisation, attracting more people to its digital space.
3. Kano (9 million)
Kano, the most populous state in the North, is third with 9 million internet users.
It is historically the centre of commerce and trade, and its adaptation to digital transformation makes it the leading Northern state for internet usage.

4. Oyo (8.4 million)
Oyo, known for its rich cultural heritage, is also making strides in digital engagement with 8.4 million internet users. Ibadan its capital is becoming a significant tech cluster, copying neighbouring Lagos to foster digital education and innovation.
5. Kaduna (7.4 million)
Kaduna is another Northern state making waves in the digital world, with 7.4 million internet users. It has been proactive in embracing technology, aiming to become a Northern tech hub, which is reflected in its growing internet user base.
6. FCT (5.8 million)
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) encompassing capital city Abuja boasts 5.8 million internet users.
As the administrative and political heart of Nigeria, it is no surprise the FCT is among the leaders in digital connectivity, with many government and private sector initiatives pushing for greater internet penetration.
7. Rivers (5.6 million)
Rivers is not just an oil-rich state it is also a burgeoning centre for technology and innovation in the South South, with 5.6 million internet users.
Its efforts in leveraging digital technology for social and economic development are evident in its internet usage figures.
8. Adamawa (5.4 million)
Adamawa stands out in the North East with 5.4 million internet users.
Despite facing challenges, the state is making significant progress in digital inclusion, bridging the digital divide in the zone.
9. Katsina (4.6 million)
Katsina with 4.6 million internet users is another Northern state showcasing the expanding reach of digital connectivity beyond the major urban centres in Nigeria.
This growth testifies to its increasing awareness and adoption of digital technologies.
10. Delta (4.4 million)
Rounding off the list is Delta, with 4.4 million internet users. Known for its oil production, the state is also making strides in the digital world, contributing to the diverse landscape of internet users nationally.
