Lagos builds 57 jetties for water transport

Mr Yinka Morinho, the Managing Director, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), on Monday said the Lagos State Government had built 57 jetties to boost water transportation system across the state.

Morinho told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the jetties were built in collaboration with the state Ministries of Urban Areas and Works, Ferries Operators and LASWA.

According to him, the jetties were part of the Lagos State Government determination to provide the necessary infrastructure for investors and stakeholders to operate.

He added that apart from the jetties, the state government also dredged and navigated water channels for operators and to prevent accident on waterways.

“Lagos State does the dredging and navigates water channels on the waterways for operators.

“The state government provides all necessary infrastructure on the waterways to make it comfortable and convenient for operators to work,“ Morinho said.

The director added that the state government in conjunction with LASWA had also improved on its intermodal transportation which involved the use of more than one mode of transport for a journey.

According to him, the intermodal transportation for the state included roads and water transport system and are built at Ikorodu, Osborne and Badore ferry terminals.

“There are bus stops already built close to the jetties for commercial buses to discharge passengers.

“The bus stops also contain between 300 and 400 car parks for private car owners to board boat or ferry.

“Commercial drivers discharge their passengers at the jetties and they board either boats or ferries in continuation of their journey,“ he said.

He said that the idea was to make water transportation system an alternative means of transportation for people.

Morinho said that safety measures had been put in place to ensure the safety of lives and property while aboard.
