Labour unions, lawyer task Ebonyi governor-elect on good governance

Labour unions in Ebonyi and a human rights lawyer on Wednesday in Abakaliki, urged Chief Dave Umahi, the governor-elect to ensure on good governance under his administration.

The leaderships of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Ikwo chapter, appealed to the incoming administration to hinge its leadership on good governance.

 

 

Mr Ikechukwu Nwafor of the TUC and Greg Esheya chairman of COAESU, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the people expect the incoming administration to adhere strictly to the rule of law.

 

 

They urged the governor-elect to respect the independence of the three arms of government for effective administration, human and infrastructural development.

 

 

“The task before the incoming administration is enormous and people expect the governor-elect to adhere to the rule of law, separation of powers, human and infrastructure development.

 

 

“The expectation is that the new administration will make job creation for the teeming unemployed youths a top priority, to reduce restiveness among youths, Nwafor said.

 

 

On his part, Esheya said COEASU would support the incoming administration and urged him to respect the principle of rule of law and separation of powers in running state affairs.

 

 

“We, in COEASU, enjoin the incoming leadership to respect the principles of rule of law and separation of powers as enshrined in the constitution.

 

 

“Great democracies such as America, Great Britain, Germany and France are founded on strict application of the tenets of rule of law, separation of powers and respect of human rights,’’ Esheya said.

 

 

In a separate interview, Mr Clement Aiyamekue, a human rights lawyer, urged the governor-elect to purge himself of any dictatorial tendencies and respect other arms of government.

 

 

He enjoined the incoming administration to use its political power for the development of the people and society at large.

 

 

“Political power is used to address societal ills and it is an instrument for economic, social and political emancipation of the people,’’ he said.
