Vice Chancellor of the Kwara State University (KWASU) Malete, Prof. Muhammed Mustapha Akanbi, has advocated cycling among students and staff of tertiary institutions on their campuses.
Akanbi made the call on Thursday when he flagged off the cycling programme by the newly formed cycling club of the KWASU on the institution’s campus.
He said that cycling and other sporting activities aid achievement of greatness in academics.
He explained that the right frame of mind that the students need to receive knowledge rightly in school and the teachers need to impart the knowledge effectively could be attained through an exercise regime such as cycling.
The Vice Chancellor also said that cycling was good for promoting healthy atmospheric condition and beautiful environment on campus.
He said that riding bicycles on campus would not jeopardize the eco-system as vehicles and motorcycles would, due to emission of carbon monoxide.
Akanbi said that KWASU management would continue to promote sporting activities in the school as he expressed hope that the university would in future produce Olympics medalists.
He said the school would also encourage among the students the practice of planting trees to enrich healthiness and beauty of physical environment of the school.
In his own speech, chairman, sport committee of the university, Dr Abubakar Laaro, said there are more sports programmes the University would be planning to aid physical fitness of students and staff.
He thanked the Vice Chancellor for his support for the cycling club.
Also speaking, the Dean, Student Affairs of the University, Prof. Mashood Jimba urged more students’ participation in the cycling.
