Presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Kola Abiola, on Tuesday said he would uphold the unity of Nigeria if elected.

At a presidential parley organised by the South-West Development Stakeholders Forum (SWDSF) in Ibadan, Abiola said he would deal decisively with secessionists if he is voted president.

In the South-East, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are spearheading calls for secession while the Ilana Oodua group want an independent Yoruba Nation in the South West.

Abiola, who is the son of the late politician Moshood Abiola, said the actions of the secessionists are unconstitutional and amount to treason.

“I will not accept any action that would threaten the unity of Nigeria if elected, but my administration would encourage them if only it would not affect the unity of Nigeria,” he said.

Abiola added that PRP has been in existence for many years and remained the party that believes in true federalism.

The SWDSF is made up of civil society organisations, professionals and religious leaders.

The interactive parley with presidential candidates of major political parties will continue on Wednesday in Ibadan, Oyo State.
