Kidnappers bomb Ondo Catholic Church in an attempt to abduct priest

The church attack by suspected bandits, reportedly occurred in the heart of the Owo town, behind the palace of the Olowo of Owo.

A Catholic Church in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State was reportedly bombed in the early hours of Sunday, June 5, during church service, and many worshipers were said to have been killed during the attack by suspected bandits.

It was gathered that many worshippers were killed in the explosion while several others were injured. Those injured were rushed to a nearby hospital in Owo for medical attention.

An eyewitness told TheNiche that the explosion occurred on the church premises when service was ongoing at the Church 

It was further gathered that the gunmen hurled dynamite into the church in a bid to abduct a priest. The gunmen were not successful, according to eyewitnesses who were also members of the church.

This attack has now heightened the security situation in Ondo State where random kidnappings initially led to the formation of the Amotekun Security Network. 

Recall that the Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria was abducted and was only release after N100 million was paid for his release.

TheNiche reports that the Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has condemned the attack on the St Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State today, June 5. 

In a statement by Richard Olatunde, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Ondo State, Akeredolu is deeply saddened by the unprovoked attack and killing of innocent people of Owo, worshipping at the St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, on Sunday.

The bandits were said to have hurled bombs into the St Francis Catholic Church and opened fire at the worshippers which left many dead.
