Leicesters’ Kelechi Iheanacho scored the only goal, as Nigeria beat the Pharaohs of Egypt after a strong display in Garoua, Cameroon

Three-time African Champions, Nigeria began their campaign in Cameroon with a strong display as they dominated their North African opponent in their group opener.
Former Manchester City striker, Kelechi Iheanacho was on target as the Super Eagles comfortably beat seven-time champions Egypt.
The 25-year-old opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 30th minute, when he buried a pass from Joe Aribo with a stunning half-volley on the turn.

Nigeria dominated throughout, with Egypt keeper Mohamed El Shenawy tipping a Taiwo Awoniyi header onto the bar just after the restart.
Awoniyi had already started jubilating but the referee waved his claim off and the replay showed the ball did not cross the line.
The Egyptians were on the back foot for most of the match but Mohammed Salah almost equalised for the Pharaohs in the second half but his effort was saved by Okoye.
The Pharaohs offered little in response after falling behind in Garoua, as Nigerian held on to win the encounter narrowly with Kelechi Iheanacho’s lone strike.
Super Eagles will now play Sudan on Saturday, January 15, 2022, while Egypt have a date with Guinea Bissau on the same day.
