Kalidou Koulibaly says Mendy is the world’s best goalkeeper

Kalidou Koulibaly, Senegal captain asserts his team deserved to win the AFCON title after waiting for a very long time

Napoli defender, Kalidou Koulibaly, has reinforced FIFA’s position by calling Edouard Mendy the best goalkeeper in the world, after his heroic performance during the penalty shootout of the African Cup of Nations final.     

FIFA recently named Edouard Mendy as the best goalkeeper in the world, beating Bayern Munichs’ Manuel Neuer and Paris St Germains’ Gianluigi Donnarumma in the process.

The Chelsea goalkeeper also won the best goalkeeper of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

He was also instrumental to Senegals’ 4-2 defeat of Egypt in the penalty shootout, as his stopping of Mohanad Lasheen’s spot-kick gave Mane the chance to win the trophy for Senegal. 

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Kalidou Koulibaly, who captained Senegal to defeat Egypt, said: “We feel happy.

“We knew it would be hard to win the Africa Cup of Nations, but today we made it.

“Our team deserved to win this title. We had been looking for this for a long time and now we have it. This team is magnificent.

“It was a tough game and a tough tournament. We made it with our team and our power.

“Our goalkeeper is the best in the world and we win the title.”
