Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has accused president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, of playing partisan politics in Imo State.

Mr Onanuga stated this in a post on X on Thursday after workers shut down economic activities in Imo State and at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri. They also disrupted businesses at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

The presidential aide faulted the NLC president’s claim of fighting for workers in the state.

Onanuga’s reaction comes on the heels of Ajaero’s meeting with the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the state, Athan Achuonu.

According to Onanuga, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) bought the lie told by Ajaero about fighting for workers.

“Joe Ajaero, with the Labour governorship candidate, (are) playing partisan politics in Imo. And he claims he is fighting for all workers in the state. TUC surprisingly bought the lie,” he wrote.

The NLC and TUC have since announced that nationwide strike would begin on November 14 if nothing is done to improve workers’ welfare in Imo State. They also intend to use the strike to show their anger over the attack on Ajaero.

Labour leaders are accusing Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is seeking a second term in office, of violating workers’ rights.

They also declared “the person of Uzodimma, the Governor of Imo State … persona non grata at all airports in Nigeria until he purges himself of bestial tendencies.”

A statement by the NLC and TUC had said, “Our unions will make further efforts through our international affiliations to blacklist Hope Uzodimma worldwide.

“Furthermore, all aviation workers in Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri are hereby directed to stay at home.”
