Jigawa secures conviction of 44 sex workers, 17 patrons

Jigawa notches up fight against behaviour labeled immoral by jailing prostitutes, their patrons to various prison terms

For the Hibah morality police in Jigawa State, the conviction of some sex workers and their patrons by a Magistrate Court sitting in Ringim Local Government area of the state, on Friday, was a breakthrough. 

The Magistrate, Salisu Musa Jahun, sentenced the 44 commercial sex workers and 17 of their customers to various months of prison term. 

According to reporting by Daily Post, the defendants  were arraigned before the Jigawa magistrate court on two-count charges of prostitution and causing public unrest, according to the charges drafted by the Hisbah Islamic police. 

The defendants included 44 females and 17 males.

The Magistrate, while delivering the judgment in Ringim, one of the local governments in Jigawa State, said: “in the first offence, the court sentenced them to three months imprisonment or fine of N15,000, while in the second offence, they were sentenced to three months’ imprisonment or a fine of N10,000.”

He explained that in total, the 44 convicted women were sentenced to six months’ imprisonment or a fine of N25,000 each.

He said the 17 men arrested at the brothels were sentenced to a five-month jail term or fined N 25,000 each.

He said the convicts have also signed an agreement that the court should double its judgment whenever they were re-arrested on similar offences.

Jigawa State Hisbah commander, Ibrahim Dahiru warned that the command will continue to fight against immortal activities and social decadence across the State.
