Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has appointed the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega, as the pro-chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Aliyu Ubandoma, announced this in a statement on Thursday in Lafia, the state capital.

Born in Jega, Kebbi State in 1957, Jega replaced Professor Maurice Iwu, who vacated the position of INEC chairman on April 28, 2010. Jega retired on June 30, 2015, handing over his position to Amina Zakari according to a directive by then-President Muhammadu Buhari.

Jega is a former vice-chancellor of Bayero University, Kano and a former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Ubandoma said the appointment was based on the powers bestowed on the governor as the visitor to the institution, adding that the governor approved the appointment in furtherance to the commitment of his administration to ensure the institution’s academic excellence.

He said the governor also approved the appointment of Shuaibu Kore, Thomas Ogiri and Mary Enwongulu as members of the governing council.

He added that the governing council would be inaugurated on a date to be announced later.
