The chief executive officer of IrokoTV, Jason Njoku, has provoked some Nigerians into anger when he said that school fees of N4.6 million is cheap.
Njoku, a British-Nigerian businessman, argued that what he pays for his three-year-olds’ education was more than the N4.6 million.
The co-founder of iROKOtv made the comment while reacting to a Twitter post of a Nigerian, @ugodre, who asked if the bill of Atlantic Hall Educational Trust Council was worth it. The bill was for a new Junior Secondary School student.
@ugodre said: “This is a really good school. But guys, is this fee actually worth it?”
But Njoku, tweeting via his handle @JasonNjoku, replied: “Most Nigerians don’t realise but most things in Nigeria are actually super cheap by African (forget global standards). For Tier 1 education in Africa (forget about globally) this for boarding school is cheap. I pay more for my 3-year olds Montessori school.”
The comment by Njoku elicited angry reactions.
@johnusifoh said: “Because you earn in foreign currencies which is why it’s cheap for you. What about the individuals earning in local currencies?”
@ann_yyz said: ““Cheap” is relative! How much is minimum wage? Exactly! To the average Nigerian, it is expensive. Your comment is somewhat insensitive.”
@Dejideyforyou said: “Paying 30k for a “yearbook” which another school can get it done for far less is not about standard but fraud. We should diffuse the Nigerian belief that things are automatically standard when they are very expensive.”
