After his conviction for the murder of Iniubong Umoren, the judge asked Akpan if he would like to say “something” for which he responded: “My Lord, I am not guilty.”

The convicted murderer of Iniubong Umoren, Uduak Akpan, has told Justice Bassey Nkanang that unlike him, other killers in the country get away with their crimes.
A High Court in Akwa Ibom State today August 4, handed the death sentence to Uduak Akpan, the first accused in the murder trial of a job seeker, Iniubong Umoren.
Iniubong Umoren was murdered by the 20-year-old Akpan who turns out to be a serial rapist posing as a recruitment agent.

Umoren had just graduated from the University of Uyo and was waiting for her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) call-up when Akpan set her up with a fictitious job offer and then murdered her in his home.
After his conviction, the judge asked Akpan if he would like to say “something” to the court, for which he responded: “My Lord, I am not guilty.”
The judge told him that the court had passed that stage, and that he should say something related to the case. It was then he declared: “My Lord, in our country, there’re many assassinations, but nobody is doing something about it.”
At this point, he tried to escape, but alert policemen in and outside the courtroom apprehended him.
