About 45,000 people applied for the recent OgunTeach Intern Programme through which only 2,000 teachers will be employed, the government has disclosed, a further confirmation of the dire situation of unemployment in Nigeria.
Ogun Science and Technology Commissioner, Abayomi Arigbabu, a professor, disclosed at a stakeholders’ meeting Abeokuta will select the best from the candidates who would assume work by April.
He reiterated education in the state remains free from primary to secondary school and warned any principal or head teacher caught charging fees would be sanctioned.
Education has been free up secondary school in the South Western states (of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, and Osun) since 1979, which built on free primary education instituted in 1955 when the states were called Western Region and Obafemi Awolowo was Premier.

“And for the first time after eight years, this government employed 1,000 teachers who have just been given permanent employment. Another set of 2,000 teachers are about to be employed again under the OgunTeach Intern Programme.
